"It is an oddity in all the most fascinating of ways, not the least of which is the sonic appearance of a guest-artist from the far reaches of weirdness on every one of the twenty three tracks this lengthy tape features. Weaving all of these scenes together is a sense of vertigo that’s just startling enough to be oddly comforting, even warm in a strange sort of way. A hypothermic delirium to the tune of music boxes, warped and warbling human voices, aging synthesizers, scarcely recognizable field recordings of objects being rattled or shuffled around. Johannes Schebler's Baldruin has emerged over the last couple of years via a stream of enchanting tapes, including several splits on the SicSic label. His largely acoustic psychedelic miniatures suggest dark fairytale stumbles across strange and spectral things in the deep woods, leaving the listener with fleeting, amorphous impressions. Comparisons are hard to draw, but there are occasional hints of Popul Vuh, or Faust's more pastoral moments.

This album consists of collaborations with 14 like-minded artists, the list of which reads like a partial who's who of the current cassette underground.

Baldruin / Sunhiilow (SicSic, 2012)

"Dark ambient and light ambient go together like the flavors in a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, or for the more prosaic, yin and yang. SicSic Tapes’ latest split release presents the music of two solo artists whose work each complements the other, although their timbres and moods are completely different. Only when played back-to-back does the connection become apparent.

Baldruin (Johannes Schebler) takes Maggison’s fable-like wonder and turns it on its head. But while Schebler’s work is dark, his darkness also yields some light, creating a current between the sides. Here are crackles instead of bells, crinkles instead of tones, jammed melodies instead of gentle lilts. Still there is beauty – dark beauty, but beauty nonetheless, the enchanted forest that hides a hungry and crippled beast."
A Closer Listen

Baldruin’s slightly nightmarish playground orchestra is the perfect equivalent to Sunhiilow’s music. Again there is all the individual notes swirling like glowworms through a late summer night held together by Johannes Schebler’s talent for frail and creepy soundscapes.

Baldruin / Least Carpet (SicSic, 2011)

"Over on the other side of the tape lie waiting Baldruin – seven slices of – shall we settle for – shimmer toned chamber sonic reverence and I say that because amid these frost sculptured ether echoes which aside being beguiling and bewitching there’s a sense of unworldly stillness for these oft parched heavenly opines stir ominously with an appeal to admirers of Bronnt and lesser so to the musique concrete mosaics found deep in the Radiophonic vaults, our favourite moment the hauntingly oppressive b-movie mutated sci-fi stew that is ‘Gravitation’ as it shares psychotropic mind altering space with EAR and highlights Baldruin’s acuteness for the eerie and atmospheric at times sounding not unlike dreams of tall buildings. Yet amid the hums, the dronal cycles and the chilled bowed chime effects ‘Ausklang’ being one of those check behind the sofa moments) while centrepiece of the set ‘Geistertadt’ is sparsely caressed with a becoming hushed balletic majesty that solemnly genuflects gracefully murmuring to a dialect informed by the sound collage pioneers Schaeffer and Henry."

Baldruin is both haunted and haunting, blending ritualistic psychedelic folk jams with vast, shimmering ambient soundscapes to create a deeply cavernous sound. For fans of Starving Weirdos and RV Paintings.
