German duo Hui’s Zerbricht Fels feels less like a traditional record and more like a landscape in motion — a fractured environment where synthetic textures and organic matter continuously blur into one another. Across the release, brittle rhythms, dissolving drones, and shimmering tonal debris drift through the mix like signals caught between collapsing architecture and dense overgrowth, balancing precision with instability at every turn.
The collaboration between Johannes Schebler and Sven Fritz began through a chance online encounter in 2023. After exchanging messages about each other’s releases on labels like Orange Milk, mappa, and Buh Records, the two discovered they not only lived in the same city of Wiesbaden, but only a short walk away from one another. In a place they describe as largely disconnected from the kind of experimental music they make, a friendship quickly formed, eventually evolving into a deeply collaborative and inspiring creative partnership.
That sense of unexpected convergence runs throughout Zerbricht Fels. Metallic pulses stretch into humid expanses, distant harmonics bloom and decay like light through fog, and low frequences adding warmth beneath the surface. The music unfolds like a journey through a seemingly natural world — both futuristic and ancient, resembling a kind of abstract folk theatre repeatedly interrupted by artificial figurations. At times the sound feels strangely plastic and animated, just shy of comic, before collapsing back into something organic, beautiful, eerie, and deeply atmospheric.
While traces of leftfield, ambient, electroacoustic music, and sound design appear throughout the record, Hui avoids settling into any fixed language, instead constructing a fully immersive world of its own. The result is cinematic without relying on singular narrative — music that feels simultaneously alien, intimate, and completely alive.
When asked about the artwork, Hui described it as “almost like a portrait of a baroque Wolpertinger*” an image that perfectly mirrors the record itself: strange, ornate, hybridized, and suspended somewhere between mythology, ecology, and shifting focus.
